WALLIS BIRD

In a nutshell: The lass from Wexford lost all the fingers on her left hand as a toddler - but, refusing to be ground down, she had all bar one sewn back on and slapped the face of adversity by learning to play guitar upside down. The result is a beguiling mix of rasping folk and gentle songbird flutters, bereft of any self doubt – Wallis will not be coming quietly. A surge of musical hope.

Imagine if you will: Carole King, Janis Joplin and The Cranberries bow down – your crown has gone.

Verdict: Ireland’s very own Janis Joplin.
