In a nutshell: When Mojo named the debut album by Rachel Unthank & The Winterset as Folk Album of the Year in 2005 the Northumbrian quartet could’ve been forgiven for thinking it gets no better than this. Now with EMI stepping in for the follow-up, The Bairns, these leftfield folkies are striding out into a world beyond cult success.

Imagine if you will: Subverting the highways and byways of frolk tradition with love and a sly understanding of what makes it tick.

Verdict: A more accessible album than the its brilliant predecessor, but one that never dilutes its soul for a second.
