In a nutshell: Ten years since they were plucked from indie anonymity by Steve Lamacq, Idlewild are off EMI, leaving behind five albums and one mini-album of angular rock carved from granite. Elements of the greats, from Nirvana to Blur, are here, combined with Scottish rock’s own enduring knack for a rousing anthem. But Idlewild’s ambitious all-embracing strength is very much their own.

Imagine if you will: The basic alternative rock formula twisted in and out until it stands up to applaud.
