In a nutshell: The final straw for Gwyneth Herbert came when her previous label forced her down the dark alley that was the big band album. Not one for draping herself over grand pianos whilst 20 chubby baldies ogle her and parp their trombones in the name of jazz, she jumped ship to ultra cool Blue Note and got busy in a Camden studio with this intimate and enticing riposte.

Imagine if you will: Norah Jones getting bitch-slapped by Elton John, then breaking a bottle of red wine on his slaphead.

Verdict: Oak like, weathered and sultry – gets better with time, like a good whisky.
